As you may have heard already, I have started a new lawnmower-racing group, sanctioned by ARMA. The new group’s name is Badger State Mower Racing Association, and I am the president. Those helping me in this endeavor are Bill Singsime, Ty Rindt, the whole group at Xtreme Mower Mayhem (Kel, John et al), Steve Bottjen of Brothers of the Blade, and a slew of friends interested in the betterment of Wisconsin lawn mower racing.

Aaron and Stacey Crowell of Bel Aire, Maryland started ARMA a few years ago. The goal of ARMA is to provide a fair and equitable sanctioning body for lawn mower racers across the country. This is truly an organization of racers, for the racers. Decisions are based on the premise, “what’s best for the racer?” not “What’s best for the national sponsor?” Additionally, while Amsoil is a sponsor of ARMA, neither Amsoil nor ARMA will ever sponsor your competitor.

We are currently working hard to fill our schedule of summer races, and we are currently working on several possible dates with a variety of race venues. These races will be held on longer tracks, measuring around 700 feet in length.

There will also be a schedule of “short track” races in
the fall of 2008 in and around the Wisconsin Rapids area. A short track is a track of around 300’ in length.
My son Mike and I have raced these tracks several
times in the past few years, and had a ball. Big motors don’t matter in this type of racing, good driving does.

We are also planning ice racing, which will occur in winter of 2009. These again will be in the Wisconsin Rapids area. We hope to have a complete short track and ice racing schedule announced before Labor Day.

To keep and fulfill the goals of ARMA, Badger State Mower Racing will strive to keep racer costs at a minimum. We will not charge race fees at any event this summer. There may be a small race fee for the short track and ice racing events, but these will be nominal charges, and the proceeds will go toward the purchase of trophies and the host charity.

We hope to see you all at the track somewhere this summer, where we hope to answer the question, “Can monster mowers really race?”

Sincerely,

Steve “Bert” Bertrand
